Traffic chaos around Sowton, Exeter due to motorway collisions

Traffic is queuing to get out of Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter after two collisions on the M5 earlier today.

The motorway is due to be closed for a number of hours and traffic is being diverted away from the scene of the incidents.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene of a further serious road collision on the M5 between Exeter and Cullompton.

The second collision, which involved three cars and an HGV, occurred on the northbound carriageway at Hele Straight between Junction 29 and 28 around 3.45pm today.

Two people have been seriously injured and have been taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, one by air ambulance.

Police, fire, two ambulances and a medical team are at the scene.

The northbound carriageway of the M5 has been closed and is expected to remain shut for some hours. The northbound onslip at Junction 30 has also been closed.

The M5 Southbound entry slip road is closed at J27 for Tiverton.

Traffic diversions are in place but drivers are urged to avoid the area or delay travel if possible.
