A MID Devon transport company has been awarded a multi-million- pound contract by utility company South West Water.

Gregory Distribution, which has its head office in North Tawton and has depots in Cullompton and South Molton, will take over the contract in April.

The transport firm employs 1,200 nationwide and its contract to transport bio solids for South West Water is worth £2.6m a year.

The contract was first awarded to Gregory five years ago.

Business unit director Richard Carswell said he was delighted SWW has again decided to award the contract to them.

"We have provided South West Water with improved operational performance through innovative vehicle designs and use of the latest technology," he said.

South West Water's Richard Gilpin, said: "This announcement is further proof of our commitment to investing in the region."

“What a joy to hear that Gregory Distribution has won another large contract. I hope and pray that one of the designated hauling routes include the A396 Tiverton to Exeter or Tiverton to Crediton. I really start to get upset and wonder whats happening if I dont hear and see one of their 40 tonne H.G.Vs passing my cottage every half an hour. It must be a pleasure for the drivers of these wagons delivering their loads along the picturesque Exe Valley through the conservation area of Bickleigh and over the listed bridge which for most of the year only has two thirds of its parapet walls standing intact! Why should these Distribution companies like Gregorys have to use purpose built roads like the A361 and the M5 motorway after all its nowhere near as scenic as the A396. Just think of the driving skills that the Gregory H.G.V drivers aquire whilst using the valley route, for instance cutting across the bends, making sure their offside wheels are over the white lane lines, missing oncoming buses and other H.G.Vs by centimeters and causing car drivers to take deep gulps of air and thank the almighty that they passed without incident. Role on Monday things are looking up! hopefully I should be able to spot at least two juggernauts every half hour. By the way, the bridge wall is down again and has been, for at least a month. That great idea of the Country Mile A396 road improvement scheme implemented by our knowledegable Council friends, installing TRIEF kerbs on the north side of the bridge to alleviate H.G.Vs and buses wrecking the bridge walls worked well didn"t "it" this time last year the walls had been demolished and rebuilt at least three times. things are looking up in the conservation area of Bickleigh.”
