Tomahawks, feather headdresses, moccasins and painted hides will be on show at the award-winning Royal Albert Memorial Museum later this month as a touring exhibition exploring the world of Native American warfare and ritual comes to Exeter.

The show, from the British Museum, runs from September 22 to January 13, 2013, and includes examples of Native American life from 1800 to the present. Entitled "Warriors of the Plains: 200 Years of Native North American Honour and Ritual" it will examine the deeper ritual significance of these objects and the legacy they have left today, revealing how crucial they are in maintaining the identity of modern-day Plains Indians.

The Exeter museum, which won Museum of the Year 2012, is the only museum in the South West, and one of only four in Britain, which has been given the opportunity to exhibit the artefacts.

The free exhibition is also looking for responses from local military veterans and members of the armed forces. Their views and opinions will then be compiled to create a digital display entitled "Once a Warrior", and will be included in the main exhibition from October 12.
