HYBRID van specialists Ashwoods Automotive have scooped three Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation Awards.

The system developed by the Exeter-based firm, which is now used by large fleets to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency, won the Power/Energy, Sustainability and Transport categories in the prestigious contest.

The IET Innovation Awards recognise the most creative companies operating within a wide variety of engineering and technology disciplines, and this year attracted a record 420 entries from around the globe across 15 categories.

Martin Kadhim, business development director at Ashwoods Automotive, who collected the awards at a black-tie ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in London's Park Lane, said: "To even have been nominated in categories with some of these fantastic companies is a real honour. We've tirelessly developed our technologies for commercial purposes, not just for innovation's sake. We've taken this product from innovation to commercialisation and it's great to be recognised in this way."

Ashwoods was recently runner-up in the Low Carbon Innovation by an SME category of the LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards, as well as retaining its ranking as one of the fastest growing companies in the European clean technologies sector. It comes after the firm won the Innovation of the Year category at the inaugural Express & Echo Business Awards in April this year.

Designed as an alternative to electric vehicles, the Ashwoods hybrid drive system is now used by more than 35 companies, including Royal Mail and BT, saving an estimated 356 tonnes of carbon per year.

The hybrid drive system was designed and built in Exeter, with the installation, servicing and maintenance now carried out by a nationwide network of dealers.
