Trophies a symbol of divided opinion

THE letter, Animals shouldn't be sport trophies, September 11, makes me wonder whether the anonymous writer is aware of the Hunting Act 2004.

The author was sickened, on a visit to Sandringham, to find rooms full of animal heads (trophies) which were the product of so-called successful hunting days.

I too was sickened when I visited a hotel on Exmoor and saw stag heads in the restaurant and at a hotel on Dartmoor I found fox masks (heads) on display in their restaurant.

The display of such trophies in Devon country restaurants and hotels meets with the approval of some people and disgusts others, but the exhibition of these animal heads well illustrates why opinion over hunting deer and fox for sport is so divided.

I am pleased that the Hunting Act has put an end to the tradition of hunting for so-called sport, but it will probably be some years before trophies are no longer on display.

“C,mon, John Phelps, who are you kidding?!
Personnally, I am always disappointed when I visit a country pub and find it has none of the traditional decoration we expect, and which is so much a part of our culture and identity. I have a fine stags head in my house too! What a shame that you want to make country pubs so artificial, but I suppose it is a sign of the times where people have become so detached from the natural world that they do not understand nature. At least when the Hunting Act is repealed we shall, perhaps, have access to some new 'trophies',eh!”
