CULLOMPTON Rangers manager Phill Tuckett hailed his side after they secured a 4-1 win over Swindon Town on Sunday.

Goals from Emma Redwood, Catherine Wright, Lola Garcia Sanchez and Angie Pope took Rangers up to fourth in the South West Women's Combination League.

After racking up their second win of the season — they opened the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Newquay — Tuckett heaped praise on his up and coming team.

"It was an extremely good result," he said. "What is pleasing is that the shape of the team is far better than it was last season.

"We have got some real belief in ourselves and are actually competing on a like for like basis. We played really well at the weekend and we seem to have got it right in the midfield at the moment.

"Catherine Wright and Emma Redwood have really gelled and benefited from last year's experiences.

"Everything really seems to have clicked around them.

"Angie Pope (striker) was injured last season and she has now rekindled her partnership with Lola Garcia Sanchez from two years ago.

"They terrified Swindon on Sunday and we showed what a good footballing outfit we are on our day."

Wright fashioned the first opportunity when she hit a shot that came back off the crossbar.

But it wasn't long before Cullompton's early pressure paid dividends, Jess Hooper pulling the back for Redwood to open the scoring.

Cully doubled their advantage before the break when Karen Buck threaded a pass through the Swindon defence and invitingly into the path of Garcia Sanchez.

The striker was fouled as she rounded a Swindon defender, but the referee played the advantage that let Pope slot the ball into an empty net.

Keeper Maxine Coupe pulled off two superb saves at the start of the second half to keep Swindon at bay.

Garcia Sanchez made it 3-0 after Hannah Dawe and Jess Hooper combined to set her up.

Although Swindon hit back with a goal of their own to reduce the arrears, Wright sealed the victory with a terrific volley in the closing stages.

Tuckett added: "Swindon were no pushovers and it was an end-to-end game.

"Whilst we scored four goals, three of them were from outside of the box.

"There is no keeper in the league that could have stopped any of those shots — they were of the highest quality.

"There were some great individual performances at the weekend but overall it was a great team performance."

Exeter City maintained their 100 per cent start to the season thanks to a 4-0 South West Women's League win at Bude.

Kirsty Caunter bagged a brace and Carla Staddon and Jade Moran were also on target. City manager Steve Tully was delighted with the result, although he admits it was closer than the scoreline suggested.

"They set up with a 4-5-1 against us and we found it really hard to break them down," he said. "The longer it stayed 0-0 the more frustrated we got and the more they grew in confidence.

"We were concerned that it would be one of those days when they might nick one. But to be fair to the girls they kept going and in the end we scored midway through the second half.

"That broke their resistance and we were able to add three more goals after that.

"That is two wins out of two now and we are really enjoying playing in this league. We have got Plymouth at home this Sunday and they are favourites to win the league, so that will be a good test for us."

In the Westward Developments Devon Women's League Premier Division, Budleigh Salterton slid to a 5-0 defeat at Tavistock.

Exeter & Tedburn Rangers launched their season with a thrilling 4-4 draw against Stoke Gabriel.

Meridith Griffin (2), Amber Corcutt and Nadine Kelly were Rangers' scorers.

In Division One, Phoenix Club began their season on a losing note following a 5-3 defeat at Brixham Villa.

Sasha Watts, Hannah Cole and Kirsty Brown were on target for Phoenix.

Stefanie Matthews netted five goals and Shannon Toogood snatched a hat-trick as Feniton romped to a 10-0 win over LFC Sparta.

Emily Hotman and Natalie Matthews were the other goalscorers.

Meanwhile, Seaton Town slumped to a 5-0 home defeat against Ilfracombe Town.
