STEVE Tully says he is not worried by the prospect of relinquishing the captain's armband ahead of today's npower League One clash with Charlton Athletic.

The defender skippered Exeter City for the first time against Yeovil Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night in the absence of injured duo Matt Taylor and David Noble.

But, with club vice-captain Noble set to return to the Grecians' starting XI this afternoon, Tully's stint as captain looks set to be short-lived.

Even so, the former Torquay United man is adamant that his mood and performance will not be affected if manager Paul Tisdale hands the armband back to Noble.

Tully said: "Whatever happens, if I'm captain or not, it doesn't matter. The manager always says he wants to have 11 captains on the pitch.

"I enjoyed it on Tuesday. I spoke to the referee before the game and the players before we went out, but I'm one of those players who usually does that anyway.

"Nothing changed from my point of view, I was just playing with a band around my arm, so it won't bother me if I'm not doing it this afternoon."

Under Tully's stewardship City recorded their first win of the season, beating the Glovers 3-1 at Huish Park to progress to the next round of the Trophy.

Tully admitted it was an important win to get, especially in light of the Grecians' heavy 3-0 defeat to Leyton Orient the previous Saturday.

He said: "It was nice to get the win, we needed one after the defeat to Orient so to beat Yeovil was a big plus. Now we have got to take that into today's match and put a marker down in the league."

City go into the Addicks clash with two points from their first three games of the season and sit 21st in League One.

The Valley outfit are eighth, with seven points from four fixtures and Tully says he expects Phil Parkinson's side to push for promotion this year.

But the Grecians defender is confident his side will be able to cause the visitors plenty of problems this afternoon.

"We have always done well at home against the bigger clubs and we will be looking to do that again today," Tully said.

"Last season we were defensively sound but struggled to score goals and this season it is the other way around, so we want to sort that out. We need to be more ruthless at the back.

"Charlton will be up there challenging this season, without a shadow of a doubt, but against Orient we had a bad day and we want to put that right."
