Emergency services were called to the A361 at Tiverton on the northbound carriageway close to Gornhay Cross at 11am yesterday.

A police spokesman said: "Three casualties were injured in the incident.

"The two more seriously injured were taken to hospital - one is in a critical condition.

"The third man is described as walking wounded."

All three men were from the Tiverton area.

Two Devon Air Ambulances landed at the scene to fly the injured men, aged in their 40s.

One of the injured men was flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where this morning police said he remained in a critical condition.

Meanwhile the second man was flown to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

A 43-year-old man from Saltash who was driving the van was yesterday arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

He was taken to Heavitree Road Police Station in Exeter for questioning and has this morning been released on police bail until May 20.

The A361 was closed in both directions at Bolham roundabout as crash scene investigators examined the area.
