Grieving Exeter mother Ali Morrish has issued an emotive plea for motorists and passengers not to drink and drive ahead of the festive party season.

Her eldest daughter Anna was killed at the age of 21 after accepting a lift home in 2008 from a party by a driver who had been drinking. She was killed when he lost control on the M5.

This week Devon and Cornwall Police launched its annual drink driving campaign for the festive period and will be carrying out extra checks on drivers over the next few weeks.

And Ali, who lives in Mount Pleasant, has again added her pleas to both motorists and passengers not to risk their lives.

Three years ago the Echo teamed up with Ali to launch Anna’s Campaign, which made a profound impact and has won the backing of councils, all the emergency services, driving instructors, pubs, clubs, reformed drink drivers and other families who have suffered as a result of such actions.

Ali made a video with the Echo that can be viewed below.

She said: “If just one person thinks, ‘I remember what happened to Anna’, and is brave enough to say, ‘I used to risk it, but won’t anymore’, then the campaign will have been worth it.

“The police quite rightly put great emphasis on warning drivers not to drink and drive. However one of the things that made Anna’s Campaign different was a reminder to passengers to make sure their driver has not been drinking and accept a lift from them. This is what happened to Anna.

“This time of year, with Christmas parties and socialising, it is even more essential that people have sorted out transport beforehand so they can get home safely.

“It may seem expensive but the cost of a taxi is nothing compared to the cost of a life.”
