It comes as Devon County Council revealed it has appealed to the Secretary of State for help with the clean-up and recovery from flooding across the region.
Council leader John Hart said: “I want the Government to recognise that we need to build stronger resilience into our whole transport network as we are likely to face more and more extreme weather conditions in the future.
“I am delighted that Owen Paterson has come here today to see the situation for himself. Mr Paterson was able to see first-hand the results of this severe flooding in Devon today and we had the opportunity to highlight the problems we will face when all the water has drained away and the true cost of the damage is revealed.
"We have urged him to tell Mr Cameron and the rest of the Cabinet that Devon should be made a special case. We have 8,000 miles of roads in Devon to maintain, which are vital to the region’s economy, and the network will continue to deteriorate if we do not receive extra funding to repair the damage permanently. That will have serious implications for our communities and the county's whole economy.”
