Variety in work and art characterises annual Fourth Wall exhibition
A painter whose Punch & Judy portraits watch over her as she pulls pints in a theatre bar is one of a group of Exeter artists staging an exhibition opening in the city today.
Hazel Johnson is part of the Fourth Wall 2013 project that aims to showcase the work of established and emerging Devon artists and kick off Northcott Theatre's annual visual arts programme.
As well as featuring a range of styles, including painting, mixed media and glass, the event also demonstrates the variety of other occupations pursued by Exeter's artists.
Hazel, who studied painting at Camberwell College of Arts and has now returned to Devon, sometimes works as a barmaid at the Northcott. Her Punch & Judy paintings were bought by the theatre following last year's inaugural Fourth Wall show and are now on permanent display in the theatre bar.

Abstract painter Tim Bailey, who specialises in themes of urban decay, also works as a chef at Harry's restaurant, Julie Ruth Bramley, who used to run her own galleries in London and North Devon, offers complementary holistic therapy, while Sandra Elson is a full-time art teacher at St Peter's C of E Aided School in Exeter.
Others showing their work – much of which is for sale – include Robin Doyle, Margaret Johnson, Katie Scott-Hamilton and Vicky Thrower, who doubles up as exhibition curator alongside Sophie McCormack and Tanja Bartlett.
"Devon is such a magnet for artists and we relish putting these exhibitions together," said Tanja.
"It's fantastic to be able to give them a chance to show their work in such a great space.
"Staff and visitors are extremely impressed with the high quality of work on display and I hope the exhibition programme will continue to be enjoyed by participating artists and visitors alike."
The visual art programme will continue with group exhibitions by Devon Artist Network, Double Elephant printmaking studio, Magic Carpet community arts for health charity, and a solo show by Exeter-based Nina Kleinzeller.
Fourth Wall 2013 is at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter until January 20. For more details, visit www.exeternorthcott.co.uk
