Vince Cable praises Flybe Academy during Exeter visit
Business Secretary Vince Cable has hailed the "high level of engineering skills" on show at Flybe's Training Academy in Exeter.
The senior Liberal Democrat MP met apprentices before trying his hand on a flight simulator during a visit to the facility today.
Mr Cable described the £11.9m training academy – where 110 apprentices are currently being trained – as "very impressive".
He added: "They have more than 100 apprentices here and a high level of engineering skills. That's exactly what we should be doing across the country.

"Apprenticeships are a genuine success story. We have had an increase of over 60 per cent in the last couple of years, but here this is not just numbers and words – it's real people actually doing it. It's a very good story."
The airline's newly appointed Training Academy director Jacqui Hepburn said: "Flybe is proud to have welcomed such an important visitor to our Training Academy and at a time when skills development is particularly top of mind. Our successful partnership with both Exeter University and Exeter College is also one we are extremely proud of and this week, 30 new Flybe apprentices have started their three-year programme with us."
It comes as Flybe unveiled new routes from Exeter to Barcelona and Nice, with flights due to start next year.
