West Exe engineers take up the Green Power challenge!
Year 11 Aeronautical Engineers at West Exe Technology College are working on an electric car to race in the Green Power Formula 24 competition in association with Cornwall College. It is a competition for young people aged 11 to 16, encouraging them to get involved with engineering. Students have to make an electric car to race against other schools. They also have the opportunity to learn about new forms of renewable energy which will be used in the future.
They have to design and build a 'Green Power' car from scratch which must be powered by two 12 volt batteries. So far, they have constructed the chassis, seen in the photo. They already have the batteries, motor, wheels and a brake, and are now starting to build their car. Huge thanks go to Flybe who have supported them by donating a carbon fibre floor for the car.

They still need to raise funds to pay for further required parts (such as a safety seat, helmet, seat belt and steering column), and are currently looking for sponsors for their car to help fund these. They will, in true Formula One fashion, display the logos of their sponsors on the car when it competes in the regional heat at Newquay. If they can finish in the first three, they will then qualify for the national finals at Goodwood.
They will be glad to hear from any potential sponsors by 'phone to Exeter 660100, or via the contact form on the West Exe Technology College website. Watch out for further news on their progress building and testing the car and in the races!
