Since the resignation of the school’s former executive head, Steve Maddern in May, following the Echo’s revelation of his inflated £156,000 pay packet, deputy headteacher Vicky Carah took on the role as acting head.

In October, the Echo revealed details of a damning report into the financial management of Mr Maddern and former chair of governors Paul Smith.

The audit report, carried out by Devon County Council, looked into the running of the school in recent years and criticised the close relationship between Mr Maddern and Mr Smith.

It stated that Mr Maddern’s “significantly higher than normal” salary came about after he, at the request of Mr Smith, produced what is described as “misleading” information with regard to national pay scales and potential pay rises.

Peter Scott, who became chair of governors after Mr Smith stood down in February last year, has praised the staff at the school including Mrs Carah, for their “dedication” in ensuring effective running of the school since Mr Maddern’s departure.

“The college is in a good position, staff have been fantastically supportive and cooperative and Vicky has done a great job,” he added. “We hope we will make an appointment next week.”
