Wild deer hunting is humane, and fun
WITH regard to Katherine Watson's recent letter The Hunting Act Must be Enforced (June 17) having been away for six weeks I took three dogs down to my woods to search for wild deer. We were delighted to find a small group of five or six which the dogs pursued with great excitement and my encouragement.
The police insist that it is illegal for me to chase wild deer with my dogs so one might ask why they do not enforce the law.
They say they would take action if their was a complaint. I have contacted the League Against Cruel Sports and informed them of my activities and I have also invited LACS monitors to come to my farm to see if they can get footage of the deer fleeing my dogs.
Why do they do nothing to prevent me continuing to pursue wildlife with dogs?
The answer is two-fold.
Firstly, if what I do is indeed illegal then all I would have to do to comply with the law is lose a dog and ruthlessly gun down all the deer. In a parliamentary briefing LACS insisted that this is 'humane pest control'. They know full well my methods are far more humane than obeying the law.
Secondly, the government have admitted that the law is so badly drafted that they do not know if chasing wild deer with dogs is actually illegal where there is no intent to kill. LACS do not complain about my actions because they are scared about what the result of any trial would be.
The Hunting Act is a bad and unclear law. People can and should continue openly pursuing deer with dogs in order to manage them. It is a natural and humane form of wildlife management and also great fun.
Any hunts that wish to do this on my land have my full permission.

“"hat government are you on about" I am referring to the Labour Government and a written reply made by their Jim Fitzpatrick that stated they have decided that they don't know if chasing deer with dogs is illegal.”

“Junkers99 I have no idea what my dogs intend nor I suspect do they! I intend for the dogs to chase the deer and they do.
I certainly agree it would be a waste of the police's time to come and watch me chasing wild deer with my dogs because it is absurd for that to be a crime.”

“Is this Giles bloke on drugs or something?
Who does he think he is to suggest that the league against cruel sports is somehow:
"scared about what the result of any trial would be"
Based on what? Where's your evidence to say that anyone from them is scared? I reckon you would like to THINK they would be scared, but in reality, mate, they aren't bothered about little people like you!
Also, about this this bold statement you make:
"the government have admitted that the law is so badly drafted that they do not know if chasing wild deer with dogs is actually illegal where there is no intent to kill"
What government are you on about? It was Tony Blair who admitted that he'd sabotaged the law to make it loosely 'legal' for people to still hunt with hounds. Labour never 'admitted' the law was 'badly drafted' Where is your evidence for this?
People like your sort are mere fantasists, dangerously up stirring trouble that doesn't exist!
Get some sleep, dreamer, and hopefully you will wake up to the reality that nobody cares about your silly whim, and hunting, especially foxes, with hounds is well and truly over!”

“"Why do they do nothing to prevent me continuing to pursue wildlife with dogs?"
Simple. Firstly, they have better things to do!
Secondly. Your dogs have no intention of causing the deer any harm at all as they are not trained to do so, and they are not a breed that will hunt deer, either. They are merely pets enjoying a walk as other pet dogs do. LACS and the police are well aware of this, I'm sure.
Let's all hope your dogs don't pursue and harass farm animals and riders on horseback as a result of your encouraging them to chase larger animals!!
I seriously wonder why you feel the need to keep pestering the police and LACS. Why on earth do you think either would want to come and watch you take your dogs for a leisurely stroll and encourage them to enjoy their walk and pursue deer? Has it not occurred to you what a waste of time and taxpayer's money it would be?
Perhaps you really are the attention seeker that many folk assume you are, having read your countless letters to various newspapers repeating the same issue time, and time again?
You seem unaware, Mr Bradshaw that it is you, and you alone who insists on continually pursuing this activity, when there are thousands of other landowners all over the country who could raise the same 'dilemma', but don't deem it necessary, probably because it is merely too trivial to bother with!

“"Why do they do nothing to prevent me continuing to pursue wildlife with dogs?"
Simple. They have BETTER things to do!
And, Giles, they know, like the rest of us, that your dogs are NOT trained to pursue them to the extent that they'll do the deer any harm, AND your dogs are incapable of inflicting any harm, AND your dogs are the wrong breed to inflict any harm to the deer, AND you only do it to tease the police, LACS, animal welfare organisations, and anyone who you think may be offended (they aren't, believe me)by your walking your dogs and having a bit of fun watching them chase an animal they have absolutely no chance, or indeed, intention of harming in any way.
So, tell us, why you think the police or LACS should want to waste their time, and the taxpayer's money to come and watch you? Perhaps you are the attention seeker I have suspected for quite some time now, having read your constant stream of repetitive articles and letters to newspapers!
Let's all hope your dogs don't pursue and perhaps harass the local farm animals and riders on horseback, too. It would probably be advisable to keep them under control, instead of encouraging them, in case they cause some serious trouble one day, when your back's turned!!”
