Woman beaten to the ground in mugging on Exeter city centre footpath

A 28 year old local man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery following a mugging at the rear of the Southgate Hotel at about 12.20 p.m. today.

A woman was attacked and beaten to the ground in an unprovoked assault in Exeter city centre today.

The incident came just before 12.30pm on Little Southernhay Lane, a footpath that leads from the top of the South Street/Western Way junction and runs beside the Southgate Hotel.
The attacker is thought to have leapt on the woman from a wall and punched her to the head.
She was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital but is not thought to be seriously hurt.
Police described the suspect as being in his 30s, and wearing white trainers and possibly a denim jacket and blue hoodie.
A police spokesman, appealing for witnesses, said: “This appears to have been an completely unprovoked attack.”
