A woman has been left seriously injured after her car was hit by a van in the first of two major collisions on the M5 yesterday.

At 13.35pm a red Volkswagen Transporter van and a silver Vauxhall Tigra collided on the southbound carriageway of the M5 two miles south of junction 28 in Cullompton.

The Southbound carriageway of the M5 was closed for around nine hours and diversions were put in place

The van had been travelling on the northbound carriageway when it struck the central reservation, crossing into the opposite carriageway where it was in collision with the other vehicle.

The female driver of the Tigra sustained serious internal injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The 36-year-old woman, thought to be from London, remains in a serious condition.

a href="http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/47-year-old-man-dies-M5-multi-vehicle-crash-near/story-17512861-detail/story.html">The incident is thought to have caused a later crash on the M5 in which a man died after four cars and an HGV were involved in a shunt-type collision at the end of a tailback.<

The road was closed for around nine hours and diversions were put in place.

Officers from the Exeter Serious Collisions Investigation Unit have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the unit by telephoning police on 101, quoting log number 392 of 05/12/12.
