CLUB captain Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy caused a big upset when they knocked out Kelvin and Matt Woodgate in the quarter-finals of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton on Saturday.

The Woodgates, last year's beaten finalists, were 2-up at one stage before a tense closing stretch.

A par on the 17th was good enough to put Carey and Garnsworthy 1-up and a birdie on the last sealed a 2-up victory.

The win completed a good week for Garnsworthy, who was confirmed as Tiverton's captain for 2012 at the club's annual meeting on Thursday. Carey and Garnsworthy will now meet Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman in the semi-finals.

Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe are also through to the last four after they had a 5&4 win over Simon Budden and Colin Taylor.

They will now face either Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell or Martin Selby and Neil Carthew. Selby and Carthew overcame former champions Peter Boax and Mark Sangster 3&2 in an impressive display.

CHRIS Fisher continued his excellent start to 2010 with victory in the February Medal at Padbrook Park. Fisher, who was runner-up in a stableford event earlier in the month, returned a nett 66. His 81 was also the best gross score of the day.

He finished three shots ahead of Jim Foat, whose nett 69 was matched by Paul Knight but Foat edged second place on countback.

THE team of Tom Pettifer, Basil West and John Hooper won the inaugural Greenkeepers' Revenge Texas scramble competition. In the only event to survive the weather last week, the winning trio scored net 65 after head greenkeeper Terry Clarke had set up some extremely challenging pin positions.

In second were Colin Cole, Peter Bryan and John Cann with 66, just holding off Danny Druce, Phil Ollis and John Bingham on countback.
