First World War pictures for sale
A COLLECTION of photographs documenting the campaign of a First World War soldier is to be auctioned in Devon.
Unlike the traditional images of trenches in northern Europe, the pictures show Private Wally Langrish's war which took him from Aldershot to India and Mesopotamia before he returned in 1919.
His 9th Cycle Battalion visited ruins in Babylon and the Taj Mahal.
The album is being auctioned by Michael Bowman at Chudleigh, near Newton Abbot.
"It's a lovely album of 60 pages," he said. "What makes it so interesting is that nearly every picture is dated and captioned.
"We usually think of the First World War in terms of the Western Front.
"But, of course, we had troops in many areas of the world and this album shows what some of them were doing."
The leather-bound album belongs to Wally's great nephew John Dowdy, 67, of Teignmouth. It is being sold on Saturday and is expected to fetch up to £300.
