CHESS players from Broadclyst Community Primary School almost swept the boards at the English Riviera Chess Tournament.

James Royle, 10, came second in the under 12s tournament with Adam Batten, 10, a close third.

But the school's under 10s cleaned up with Tomas Trott and Jo Gabriel sharing joint first place and Oliver Fowles coming fourth.

Teacher and chess coach Charles Warren said: "All of the Broadclyst players have qualified for the prestigious London Tournament at the end of the year and our talented players are aiming to achieve individual honours at the Devon Championships in December."

The tournament took place at Churston Ferrers Grammar School, near Brixham.
