Never have the undead moved with so much grace and rhythm than when they put on their skates for a roller disco.

A host of zombies, corpse brides and a werewolf all made appearances at a Hallowe'en event at the Exeter Phoenix.

It was organised by the South West Angels of Terror, a roller derby team comprising members from Devon and Somerset. Roller derby is a full-contact women's sport played on quad rollerskates, with two teams skating around an elliptical track. One player from each team is designated as the "jammer" who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team, with everyone else trying to stop or help them.

Team member Kimberly Rainford said: "The event at the Phoenix was the second successful roller disco we have hosted and there will be more to follow.

"Everyone made a real effort to look the part and turned up ready to boogie on wheels, while looking their most gruesome.

"There were conga lines, crazy dance moves and an enormous amount of fake blood that all added to the fun. It was the night of the skating dead."
