THE organiser of the infamous Commando Challenge has launched two new adventurous fundraising events.

Former Royal Marine Alan Hardy is inviting youngsters aged between 12 and 15 to sign up to the inaugural Junior 5k Commando Challenge at Bicton College in April.

Like the adult events held in October and June, it will raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Royal Marines charity The C Group.

And looking ahead to 2014, participants are being sought to take part in the Gibraltar Rock Run to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal Marines.

To mark the occasion, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust has set itself the target of raising £6 million to help Royal Marines who have been wounded or injured in Afghanistan and on other hazardous operations. Mr Hardy aims to raise a £1m towards the target.

The 63-year-old from Exeter has been organising the Commando Challenge events for 22 years. This October the two-day 10k event raised £250,000 for the charities. Mr Hardy said after frequent inquiries from parents of young people wanting to take part in the challenge, he decided to arrange a junior event.

Mr Hardy is working closely with Major Dai Philips, who runs the Military and Public Services Academy at Bicton College, to design the assault course.
