Going from strength to strength

Piers Motley took over from Martin Spencer-Thomas in 2010. Since then the Bicton Street Auction Rooms has lifted its game, moving upmarket with higher-quality items, expanded and illustrated online catalogues, and an emphasis on live online bidding. This change of emphasis has started to attract national and international bidders. In May 2012 a rare Victorian travel journal - with an auction guide price of £500-£800 - sold for a staggering £66,080 when a bidding war broke out among international collectors. In addition, a Chinese bronze sold for £10,500 to a buyer in China. For those able to visit in person, viewing days are well organised and the staff are polite, friendly and helpful. And - on sales days - there's often a live link to the auction rooms in the adjacent Bicton Inn, allowing buyers to relax and have a drink, without worrying that the lot that they're interested in is about to go under the hammer. Be aware that there are buyer premiums to pay, while sellers have to pay commission fees (which vary depending on the type of sale). All in all, Piers Motley has taken the Bicton Street Auction Rooms from strength to strength.
