Our beautiful city is lacking in some ways

I FEEL that I have to write following the comments made by Cllr Adrian Fullam regarding the Exeter Northcott theatre, Echo, March 15.

I love going to the theatre and will travel to Plymouth, Torquay or even Bristol to see a show. Why? Because they put on the shows that I and many others like to see — and there lies the problem with the Northcott.

I have been to the pantomime at the Northcott in the past which I have enjoyed but apart from that, the shows that usually grace the stage are not what I would go and see.

The one that I would have gone to, which was during an Exeter Festival, was West End Shows and that sold out in hours.

So does this not tell the Northcott what people would like to see?

Exeter's Barnfield Theatre is at the moment busier than the Northcott with on the whole good audience figures — and, dare I say it, is more central than the Northcott.

I can see what the councillor is saying regarding the cost but then the council is happy to fund a new swimming pool.

Exactly how many pools does one city need? Yes, the Pyramids may be outdated but was there not a time that it was going to be refurbished? And what happens to the staff that are there at the moment if this new pool goes ahead?

I do think at times that the council does not listen to the council tax payers of this fair city regarding what we would like to see.

A beautiful city Exeter may be but in comparison to other South West towns and cities, it is found to be lacking in several areas.

“Sylvia, why don't you and the other people who want a theatrein the city centre pledge money towards it?.....If there's enough of you who really want a theatre then you can buy the land and build it.”

“The Northcott has less than half the seating capacity of the venues West End shows normally tour to. Therefore West End producers won't touch it, as they know they can't make enough money from it to cover their costs.

The Northcott should not be compared to larger venues like Plymouth's Theatre Royal or Bristol Hippodrome. It should be seen in the great British tradition of producing regional theatres like Oxford Playhouse and Bristol Old Vic. These theatres nurture new talent, tell great stories and are an asset to the cities in which they are based.”
