Steenson: Chiefs can still be No.1
The fly-half returns to former club Cornish Pirates tomorrow (2.0) as his side look to record a fourth straight win.
Their recent good form has seen them secure a top-two finish in the regular season, but Steenson said the Sandy Park squad aren't satisfied with that.
With three games to go, they still want to overhaul leaders Bristol, who play at Nottingham tomorrow.
The Chiefs led the way for two months until a three-game losing streak at the turn of the year saw them fall four points behind Bristol.
Steenson said: "We're guaranteed now at least second place but everyone in this place is striving to be number one and we'll be disappointed if we don't get there.
"At this moment in time it's all about the play-offs and getting there in good form.
"The attitude in training has been fantastic. The boys went away after the three weeks (when Exeter lost), had a good look at themselves and have come back with a fantastic attitude.
"That has spilled on to the field now, you've seen it in the last two weeks and you can see what everyone is trying to do.
"We're trying to get that ruthlessness back into the squad that was there at the start of the year."
With the play-offs now just six weeks away, clubs are stepping up their plans for the vital part of the season.
And whether Exeter finish first or second, they know when they will be at home during the pool stage.
If they finish second they will face the clubs finishing third, sixth and seventh in their pool, if they finish top they will play the sides fourth, fifth and eighth at the end of the regular season.
Exeter's first play-off game will be away to the lowest-placed club in their pool on March 20, then home to the second-placed side a week later, followed by successive matches away and home against the second-lowest club.
On April 17 they will be away to the second-ranked side in their pool before the final play-off match on May 1 at home against the lowest-ranked side.
Steenson has declared himself fit to play tomorrow and help his side build towards those play-offs after overcoming shingles.
The 25-year-old missed last weekend's 42-12 win over Nottingham but has trained since Tuesday.
He said: "Last week I tried to go out and train but I had a bit of a back problem and it all led in from that.
"I've been feeling a lot better, even when I came to the game (last weekend) I was feeling good and it's been good to get back into training. I'm feeling sharp so I should be fine for the game."
