Try-scorer shuns the limelight

RICH Baxter preferred to praise his Exeter teammates rather than take the plaudits after his two tries inspired the Chiefs' latest win.

The No.8 crossed twice during Sunday's 30-15 victory against the Cornish Pirates that stretched their unbeaten run to four games.

The second of those scores came from a run that started in his own half as he caught the ball when a Pirates player fumbled.

But Baxter said he would much rather have passed the ball onto a speedy back than have to run 65 metres to dot down himself.

"It brings back memories of the beginning of my Exeter career," joked Baxter of his long-distance effort. "In all seriousness, I was just very pleased to finish that one off.

"I was a bit worried when I realised I had to go myself because I couldn't see a winger with me, but I was pleased to finish off a couple of chances that the guys worked really hard to create."

Of his first try, he added: "We created a lot of pressure in their 22, holding onto the ball for a while, and luckily I managed to get into a bit of space and was able to finish it off."

Sunday's win was Exeter's fifth in a row over the Pirates and Baxter felt their dominance in the first half tired their hosts to enable them to run in three tries after the break.

"It was pretty crucial we got that try just before half-time," he said. "We created a number of chances and kept them in their half for pretty much all of the first half.

"I think that showed in their legs in the second half.

"We were pretty pleased with our performance, it's just nice to be involved in a team that's looking to improve in every game and move on."

Baxter and the majority of the team that played on Sunday can now expect at least one weekend off as Exeter face Leinster in the British & Irish Cup on Saturday.

The Chiefs played a second-string side in the first two rounds of the competition in the autumn and are expected to do the same in the remaining three games.

Baxter thinks the other players in the squad can help maintain the club's momentum in the next few matches before the play-offs start.

"I don't know what the plan is running into the play-offs, but I think it's very exciting for the squad right now," Baxter said.

"We might be able to carry on building this momentum over the next five weeks with a massive effort from the whole squad."
