At 10:31pm last night two appliances from Newton Abbot fire station were called to a report of a fire seen in the open near a farm in East Ogwell, Newton Abbot.

When the crews arrived at the scene they found a large quantity of tyres well alight on open ground. The Officer in Charge of the incident requested further resources to be sent on and the water bowser from Torquay fire station was also mobilised to the incident.

It was confirmed that a large quantity of scrap tyres and salvage were involved in fire and the crews used two main jets, two hose reel jets and the water bowser to supplement a water supply from a nearby hydrant.

Steady progress was made using a mechanical digger to turn over any hot spots which were then damped down.

The area was made safe before leaving the incident.
