Investment at school for blind

THE West of England School and College for young people with little or no sight has embarked on a £250,000 programme to improve and develop its Exeter campus.

The money is being spent refurbishing the two buildings which provide residential accommodation for pupils under the age of 16.

Many of school's boarders have complex learning and physical disabilities and the refurbishment programme has been designed to make day to day life much easier and comfortable for them.

Rooms in the two boarding houses — Dinham, which accommodates 21 boys, and Haldon, which has 11 girl boarders — have been made more spacious.

Special hoists and beds which raise and lower have been installed in the rooms and the bathrooms fitted with specialist furniture to make access easier.

Tracy de Bernhardt Dunkin, principal and CEO of the school and college, said: "This is a major programme of refurbishment work which has really transformed the two buildings.

"It makes life so much easier for the pupils and it also gives them an added level of privacy.

"The investment in the state-of-the-art hoists and specialist beds will also make life easier for our staff."

The refurbishment has also provided a new self-contained flat which forms part of the residential blocks.

The idea is to give pupils a taste of independent living — a place where they can practise basic skills, such as preparing their own dinner.
