Renowned musician Deirdre Cartwright visits Exeter College Music Academy students at The Barnfield Theatre Exeter to acknowledge International Women’s day and to open the Exeter College Music Academy Festival 2013.
Deirdre Cartwright is an imaginative guitarist and composer, who became well known by presenting BBC TV’s ground breaking series ‘Rockschool’. Described by The Observer as a “a most remarkable musician, having an apparently effortless command of the instrument” and by The Guardian as “a melodic, funky and hard swinging guitarist”.
Deirdre will be conducting a jazz guitar workshop with fellow guitarist Kathy Dyson. The workshop is free to Exeter College Music Academy students and there are additional workshop spaces available for members of the public to purchase. This workshop is designed for guitarists at intermediate entry level upwards. No previous jazz experience needed. Everyone welcome! Deirdre and Kathy will lead creative sessions on finding your way through jazz and exploring some improvisation skills. Deirdre’s trio featuring Kathy Dyson and Sarah P on vocals will also be hosting a gig in the evening presenting the music of Emily Remler with her project Emily Remembered.

Emily Remembered:
Deirdre Cartwright and Kathy Dyson guitars celebrate the life and work of great New York jazz guitarist Emily Remler performing swinging jazz standards, bossa nova, Remler originals and some of their own compositions.
They are joined on some numbers by vocalist Sarah P for an inspiring evening which will also feature songs by Leonard Cohen.
Emily Remembered reviews:
"Kathy Dyson and Deirdre Cartwright are both superb players albeit with contrasting styles that, nevertheless, complement each other perfectly. "All The Things You Are" reminded me of MJQ. The interplay between the guitars could have been created by Milt Jackson & John Lewis - that's how good it was." Lance Liddle, Newcastle gig review
“The event at Mills' Café was remarkable; the sheer expertise and beauty of the guitar music by Deirdre Cartwright and Kathy Dyson. Included in their two sets of guitar duets - a performance of a Neruda poem, with vocals by Sarah P, a similar treatment of a Lorca poem - La guitarra - and, most deliciously, a performance full of passion and - dare I say it - of duende of Leonard Cohen's 'Take this Waltz, a version of a poem from Lorca's 'Poet in New York'. Brought the house down.” Lorca in England festival, June 2011
