Ever-expanding city fringe launched
EXETER'S Fringe Festival has been formally launched in the city.
With support from the city council, the event has grown in size and variety and is now an 11-day event. It includes 78 live performances, including some completely new shows.

Monique Luckman, organiser from Exeter's The Bike Shed theatre company, said: "Our ambition is to create a reputation for Exeter's Fringe Festival as a place where performers can show their latest work and to be an artistic hub for emerging talent."
Ones to watch from new performers include Ed Rapley's solo shows The Middle Bit and 10 Ways to Die Onstage, which finds the Bristol performer attempting – and failing – to overcome his lazy demons with a mix of honesty, stupidity and great comic timing.
Jack and the Devil's Purse, by Angel Heart Theatre, is a darkly comic travellers' tale featuring puppeteering, for an adult audience.
Slug! is a comedy about one woman's frustrated passion, adventures with tango and struggle against slugs, and is the work of London company Human Behaviour.
Wordsmith Hannah Silva brings her ex-Barbican show Opposition to the fringe. It parodies, chops up and plays with political speeches such as David Cameron's Big Society and snippets from the weather, Twitter feeds and Winston Churchill. See www.exeterfringe.org.uk for full listings.

“What a start to the festival. Just seen Sister Of at The Bike Shed Theatre - a wonderful solo performance - and now off to see the Escapologist Tour at the City Gate. There's stand-up from Steve Day at 10pm at the Bike Shed, performance poetry at The Rusty Bike and Shakespeare at Cygnet New Theatre (both at 7.30pm) and intimate solo-show Self Portrait at the Phoenix at 9pm. And that's just some of what is happening today. So much more for the rest of the Fringe.”
