Remember Malaya heroes
Thursday, November 12, 2009, 23:00
I WAS very pleased to see The Echo salutes our heroes from each conflict, Saturday, November 7. They all deserve to be recognised but why no mention of Malaya? It was a jungle war fought by the British, the British Commonwealth and Malay forces for 12 years, from 1948 to 1960. Britain had 100,000 servicemen and women involved, some were national servicemen and others regulars, and 978 of these lost their lives. Some were buried in Singapore, but many are buried in Malaya, now Malaysia where there are no special headstones.
These lie in simple cemeteries claiming their little piece of earth for Britain. This was the only war the West won against communism. Worth a mention, I think.
