Song, dance, comedy and tributes to showbiz stars
Friday, November 21, 2008, 23:00
The show, being performed twice at the Barnfield Theatre in Exeter today only, features song, dance and comedy, and tributes to some of the world's greatest stars.
These include Flanagan and Allen, Glenn Miller, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, The Seekers, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Andy Williams, Dolly Parton and Abba.
The production gives the audience a feast of sing-along favourites from the music halls, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with a touch of swing and country for good measure.
There is also a taste of some of the most popular movies and musicals, such as Grease, Lord of the Dance, and The Sound of Music.
The story of each decade is not only told by the songs themselves. The journey down memory lane pays attention to the finest details, from the costumes to the choreography.
Rolling Back the Years is presented by Timeless Theatre Productions, which also produced the nostalgia shows Memory Lane, Memories Are Made of This and All Our Yesterdays.
Timeless Theatre claims to be the largest nostalgia show producer in the UK.
The company was formed in 2004 by Colin Francis and Marie Adele, both of whom have a wealth of experience performing on some of the world's most prestigious cruise ships and in London's West End.
Previously the directors of a company producing music hall only shows and touring smaller theatres, the pair took the music hall through to 1970s idea to a wider age group while still pleasing the more mature theatre audience.
The shows are suitable for everyone, and may appeal especially to those who say: "They don't make songs like they used to".
Colin and Marie are both among the touring cast as singers. Each show by Timeless Theatre is performed by four singers and four dancers.
Rolling Back the Years began in September 2006 but the current tour started on Wednesday, September 10, of this year, after a short break following a six-month tour of All Our Yesterdays, which visited the Barnfield Theatre in May.
The Rolling Back the Years show in Exeter is the 40th date in the extensive tour. Around half of the dates incorporate two performances in a single day.
The cast will have five more venues to visit and then will be able to take a rest after the final show on Saturday, November 29.
Tickets cost £11 or £10 for concessions. Performances take place today at 2.30pm and 7.30pm, but tickets for the evening show have sold out. For tickets for the 2.30pm performance, call the box office on 01392 270891.
