Rogers pleased with cup progression

TIVERTON Town boss Martyn Rogers says he was pleased with his side's showing in the 3-0 Devon St Luke's Cup win over Witheridge.

It could have turned out to be an embarrassing night for the Yellows after midfielder Paul Jarvis conceded a penalty in the early stages.

Yet after the visitors contrived to miss from the spot Tivvy dominated proceedings to ease through to the third round of the competition.

Rogers said: "I thought we were decent in the first half apart from giving away a penalty.

"With the amount of ball we had I felt we could have done more with it, but I have to give Witheridge credit as they worked hard."

Recent signing Phil Walsh opened the scoring for the Yellows on the half hour mark.

Paul Wyatt doubled the lead five minutes later when he smashed the ball home from 12 yards out, after Walsh's effort had been blocked.

Tivvy then took their foot off the gas in the second half and the game descended into a mundane affair, as Witheridge appeared to accept their fate.

But substitute Tom Knighton's goal 10 minutes from time, converting from Wyatt's cross, added gloss to the scoreline for the hosts.

Rogers said: "It's the first time we have had all three strikers score for a long time.

"Phil did well to get in the right place at the right time. It wasn't a great goal.

"But I have said a number of times how we need people in the right place at the right time and that the strikers should be getting in the six yard box."

The Tivvy chief was also heartened by a 10 minute cameo role from under-18s striker David Hood.

The teenager has been in prolific form for the youth side during pre-season and scored on his competitive debut as the young Yellows crashed out of the FA Youth Cup last week, with a 3-2 defeat to Newport County.

Rogers said: "Hood is a bright lad who has been in training with the first team and I wanted to give him some action.

"He has got an eye for goal and I would like to get him in the first team squad at some stage. He's bright, quick, knows where the goal is and is an intelligent player. He has got a good chance."

Tiverton Town will play Yate Town at home on October 11 instead of Oxford City, who are playing in the FA Cup on that day.
