This is Devon

WHAT a great weekend for sport last weekend turned out to be. The Chiefs won, so did Exeter City, and even my local side Alphington beat University of Exeter 2-0 at home.

Wayne Rooney has been playing away. The overpaid Premier League player who failed us in this year's World Cup is now reportedly doing the same to his partner, Coleen.

Many of today's young players are being let down by their role models. In my day we had fine upstanding players like George Best to idolise!

This week it was revealed, in a survey for the Post Office, that one in six of us has a bank account we keep secret from our partner and that the average Briton has more than £2,000 stashed away — the main reason being that, if their relationship doesn't work they will have a nest egg! Coleen?

Despite England's good fortunes this week, I heard this great one-liner: "Watching England play is like being the optimistic parent of the fat kid on sports day." My football playing days are over. I did get to play at the old Wembley Stadium though. That was when I played for the Showbiz XI in the 90s.

Singer Robbie Williams remembered this when I bumped into him at a training ground a couple of years ago in LA. He took my phone number and said he would call me up for a game at his place with Vinny Jones and Rod Stewart. Thankfully we had moved back to Devon before he rang. I couldn't cross two rabbits now, let alone cross a ball into the penalty area!

These days I prefer to use my feet for walking the coastal path and occasionally for dancing. Stacy tells me I'm more John Travolta than David Brent. Mind you, last time I was on the dance floor someone did say they were going to throw their laundry in with me!

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One tomorrow and it seems the answer to the age- old question of what makes a man a good dancer is simple. Use your head. Psychologists used video footage of men dancing to pinpoint what looks good. Mixing moves and using the torso and neck in a smooth motion was a hit, but repetitive moves using only the arms and legs were deemed very bad. Keep on strutting, all. Ciao.
