Work starts on Age Concern's new day centre

A NEW haven for elderly people has begun to take shape.

Age Concern Tiverton, Cullompton and District is relocating its day service centre to the old highways office in Broad Lane, Tiverton, with the new community hub named the Haven Centre.

Age Concern says the new facilities will enable the organisation to extend the range of services it offers to the older community which was not possible in its existing property in St Peter Street because of building and capacity limitations.

However, the charity has appealed for help after the cost of the project went over budget. It still needs to raise another £10,000 over the next two months.

Debbie Westlake, chief officer for Tiverton, Cullompton and District Age Concern, said: "We are appealing to all people, young and mature, to support and help this fantastic community project for the people of Mid Devon. No donation is too small, every penny counts and makes an impact to someone's life."

A substantial proportion of the cost of the move has already been met with contributions from a variety of sources.

Work on site at Broad Lane has already begun, with the first clients set to be welcomed at the end of March.

Mrs Westlake said: "The Haven Centre is hoping to provide, in addition to day services on five days a week, a drop-in activity and therapy centre providing services like foot care, hairdressing, IT training and painting classes."

Future plans also include opening a café.

Age Concern also hopes the new facility will enable better links between generations. Mrs Westlake said: "Intergenerational work is important in promoting understanding and acceptance between the young and the old. We are hoping to work with neighbouring Heathcoat Primary School, as well as Petroc and Blundell's School."

Alterations to the building will provide more accommodation, parking and better access. Anyone who would like information about the changes, volunteering or who wishes to organise a fundraising event, can contact Age Concern on 01884 255369.
