Bovey remain on course for promotion despite stalemate

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 06:42

BOVEY Tracey are still on course for a promotion double, despite a disappointing draw against Shobrooke Park.

The 1st XI are already up and their 2nd XI counterparts are second in their competition with one game to go.

Bovey were under pressure for second place behind long-time leaders Hatherleigh from Cornwood, who obligingly lost at home to Paignton.

Peter Turner (76) and Teigngrace-based Peter Jolliffe (36) put on exactly 100 for Shobrooke in a total of 252 for six. Chip ins came from Andrew Codling (46) and Mike Robison (45no).

Simon Newton and the ever-youthful Colin Shute had two wickets each.

Bovey's reply was running out of steam at 98 for five after experiencing problems against David Joliffe (2-44) and Codling (2-29). After Andy Longstreet had gone for 39, James Mason (49no) led the rearguard action to a draw at 175 for seven.

Hatherleigh, eight-wicket winners at Sidmouth 3rd XI, are 12 points clear of Bovey and 16 ahead of third-placed Cornwood.

Bovey will be looking to defeat Sidmouth 3rd XI at Newton Road this Saturday and hope Hatherleigh wrap things up at their end by defeating Cornwood in their last game.

Rob Acton hit an unbeaten 93 as Bradninch heaped more woes on to relegation worriers Abbotskerswell.

Abbots were limited to 181 for four in their 50 overs – and were glad of a late rally from skipper Andy Rose and Neil Williams for making that many in difficult batting conditions.

Although Gary Day had made 34 lower down, the stand of 61 in the last 14 overs between Williams (71no) and Rose (34no) gave the innings some impetus. Mark Perrott (2-55) was Bradninch's leading bowler.

Acton and Simon Bailey (29) ground out 92 runs for Bradninch's second wicket before Andy Lock made the breakthrough bowling Bailey through the gate.

Haydn Crocker was brought back in to the attack and bowled four batsmen in as many overs (4-40) as Bradninch slipped to 167 for seven. Among them was Nat Davey for 33.

Acton stood firm as the light faded, guiding Bradninch home by three wickets.

Depleted Sidmouth took a tonking when they ran into Hatherleigh, who shot them out for 91 and knocked off the runs with the minimum of fuss.

After Mike Dibble had gone for 26, and Gary Chaplin for 13, it was downhill all the way for Sidmouth from 47 without loss to 65 for three, four and five and on to 91 all out.

Devon O50s' captain Nick Rogers (6-22) did most of the damage, leaving Pete Holland (3-6) to mop up.

There wasn't much South African Steve LeRoux (2-11) could do to halt Hatherleigh as captain Ross Cherrnigton (42no) led the reply.

Axminster go into the final round of matches deep in the relegation mire after losing the basement clash at Barton by four wickets.

Tom Whittle was the man of the moment for Barton twice over, starting with a five-for-19 haul as Axminster were dismissed for 87. Dave Cadwallader (3-26) worked some of his old magic at the other end.

Rob Cheesman (21) and Andy Guppy (19) were second best to extras (27) in Axminster's runs-scored column.

Barton got the runs, but only after a struggle against Guppy (3-18) and an unbeaten 41 from Whittle. Andy McVeigh made 12.

Barton are now 26 points clear of the drop zone, where it is a straight fight between Axminster and Abbotskerswell, both on 121 points, to decide who stays and who goes.

Axminster wind up at home to Shobrooke Park. Abbots are away to Paignton.
