Mum 'shopped' son to police

Thursday, October 30, 2008, 23:00

A CITY woman complained to police about her son's behaviour in a row at her home, because she wanted him to receive help for anger management, Exeter magistrates were told.

Guy Challice, 20, of Tristan Close, Beacon Heath, pleaded guilty to assaulting his mother Lisa Anne Allen by beating, and also possessing cannabis.

He was given a year's community order and told to complete 40 hours of unpaid work in the community, when he appeared before Central Devon Magistrates' Court in Exeter yesterday.

Niall Brooks, in mitigation, said: "He is getting on very well with his mother now. She wants him to get help which is why she brought this allegation; she wants him to get help for anger management."

Prosecutor Warjinder Sadeghi said the police were called to an address in the city in the late evening of July 26.

Challice had been rowing with his mother and she tried to get her front door key out of his pocket.

"They clashed heads," said Ms Sadeghi. "He grabbed her arm and slammed it against the freezer and boiler. His mother suffered extensive bruising."

Challice was arrested at another address over the incident and admitted he also had some cannabis in his pocket.

He told officers he had been drinking.

"He looked horrified at the photographs of the injuries and showed remorse," said the prosecutor.

"He also showed his own injuries, of redness to the side of his neck and arm."

Mr Brooks said that Challice, his mother and another man had all been involved in the scuffle, which happened when everyone was under the influence of drink.

Challice had not realised that he would bruise his mother when he pushed her around and was shocked at what he had done.

Magistrates said that Challice must be supervised as part of his order.

No order for compensation was made.
