Saturday, August 16, 2008, 23:00

MUSICIANS in the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra's senior section have been selected to play in the Schools' Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The prestigious invitation follows their highly commended performance award at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham last month.

It is the first time an ensemble run by the Devon County Council's Music Service has been selected for the concert, which will see them perform in front of an audience of around 5,000 people.

Councillor John Smith, Executive Member for Children and Young People's Service, said: "This is fantastic news and further goes to show the excellent work the music service is doing to encourage Devon's children and young people to participate in music is working very well."
