Robber barges his way into East Devon home
The woman had just returned home after withdrawing cash from her bank in High Street, Honiton, on Wednesday at about 2.45pm when there was a knock at her door.
When she answered, a man barged his way into the house, knocking her aside.
Police say he found the cash and ran off.
A spokeswoman said: "This is a very serious offence and we are looking for any information that will help us with our investigation.
"We are looking to speak to anyone who saw a man matching the suspect's description just before or after the offence took place.
"This was obviously very traumatic for the lady involved.
"It appears to have happened very quickly."
The spokeswoman offered advice for homeowners on staying safe.
She said: "They should not open the door if they do not recognise, or they are not expecting, a caller.
"They should keep their door shut and look to check who is outside using a spy-hole or a window.
"They should also keep valuables away from windows and doors, hidden from view, and always be cautious when someone they don't know calls at their door.
"Be aware that bogus callers can be very convincing and persuasive."
She added: "People should remember to check identity cards from any callers who claim to be from utility companies.
"And if they are not sure, they should call the company to check. Any legitimate caller will be happy for them to do this.
"Finally, if they notice anything suspicious, they should call the police."
The robber is described as white, in his mid to late 30s, about 6ft tall and well built, but slightly fat.
He had cropped, short dark brown or black hair which was slightly receding at the sides almost into a point on the forehead.
He was wearing a blue zipped tracksuit top with light coloured piping on the seams and a round-neck collar with dark coloured trousers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at Honiton on 08452 777 444 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 — quoting police reference KH/08/872.
