Triumph and trophies at college's sports day

Thursday, July 24, 2008, 06:18

TEACHERS and children are celebrating the success of their school's sports day — which had arts and charity events as well as races.

Eight sporting records were also set at the event at Clyst Vale Community College in Broadclyst.

Sixth form students also raised money to buy a wheelchair for former student David Follett, who was left paralysed after being involved in a collision with a car last year.

Clyst Vale's sports day is designed to appeal to all students and there was also a battle of the bands competition for the more musically- minded.

Headteacher Kevin Bawn said: “There were some great competitions, the atmosphere was fantastic, behaviour was excellent, the standard of music improves every year and the weather was almost perfect.”

A new event this year was a tug of war, which attracted large crowds.

Year 7 pupil Abigail Brown set a new 1500m record, cruising round in a time of 6mins27 seconds.

More success was had by the Year 7 boys with both Joseph White and Ryan Burrows jumping 1.35m in the high jump to share a new school record.

The Year 8 boys' high jump was well contested with Jack Langdon leaping to a record-breaking 1.45m — soon surpassed in the girls' competition as Hannah Pearce soared to 1.48m, equivalent to her own shoulder height.

Two more records went in the Year 8 discus as Katie Barons launched a new girls' record throw of 16.21m.

Then Zach Lee stepped up in the boys' event and delivered a dazzling 27m throw.

Year 10 pupil Jake Woodward set another record in what is fast becoming his specialist event, throwing a distance of 26.93m with the 1.75kg discus.

The fastest tennis serve was won by Robert Knight, a player at national as well as school level, with a blistering 94mph.

The trophies for best effort throughout the day for boys and girls went to Matthew Harris and Talia Walker.

The Victor Ludorum trophy for best male performance went to Matthew Rickard.

Hannah Fitt achieved best female performance.
