'Name and shame' bid in crackdown on crime
CRIMINALS and offenders who have received Asbos will be named and shamed by Devon and Cornwall police.
The force has launched Court and Convicted a service it says is aimed at reassuring communities that action is being taken to bring offenders to justice and to lessen the impact of anti-social behaviour.
Pictures of those convicted and jailed for offences impacting most on communities and those who have been given Asbos will be posted on the force's website.
Chief Inspector Keith Perkin, who is leading the Court and Convicted campaign, said: "We know the effect crime and anti-social behaviour can have on a neighbourhood. Often people are not aware of the action being taken by the police and other agencies against offenders.
"The point of Court and Convicted is to give people information about who has been given a custodial sentence after committing crime in their community.
"We hope this will reassure them that the police, together with partners, are doing everything possible to make communities stronger and safer.
"It's not just about naming and shaming people involved in crime. It is about showing people what is going on in their community and also illustrating the chance of people becoming a victim of crime is very small."
Court and Convicted will be updated as convictions and Asbos are gained in the courts. Images of convicted offenders will also be circulated by police neighbourhood teams in the areas where the criminals have been active.
Featured on the new site this week are two Exeter men who were jailed after a double glassing in a night club.
Lewis Stevenson, 24, of Merrivale Road, St Thomas, and Martyn Heale, 22, of Wentworth Gardens, St Thomas, were put behind bars for their part in a violent attack on two men at Exmouth's Q Club.
Callum Harrison, 22, who was also involved, was spared jail.
Victims Mark Berry and Daniel Seatherton were attacked by the Exeter trio, who had been out drinking to celebrate a friend's birthday on February 18, 2007.
Stevenson, admitted two offences of wounding against Mr Berry and Mr Seatherton. He was jailed for 22 months. Heale admitted wounding Mr Seatherton. He was jailed for 16 months.
