Devon pair reach the quarter-finals

Thursday, August 07, 2008, 23:00

RUTH Rogers and Natalie Melmore recovered their poise to clinch a place in the quarter-finals of the Bowls England women's national pairs championship at Royal Leamington Spa yesterday.

The Devon duo, skipped by 19-year-old sensation Melmore, who lives in Newton Abbot, were in flamboyant mood all day, clearing their morning second round hurdle in style with a 20-9 win over a strong pair from Broadway in Worcestershire, Yvonne Hopkins and Viv Hall.

In that game, they opened up a 10-0 lead after six ends, and kept a tight rein on their opponents over the next fourteen ends.

After lunch, they were expecting tough opposition from Surrey's Shan Maylin and Caroline Duarte, because Duarte has skipped for England, and is always a force to be reckoned with.

Once again, the Kings club pair opened strongly, scoring the first 12 shots in five ends, but this time they encountered a problem mid-game, as the Surrey duo hit back to narrow the gap to just three shots at 16-13 after 12 ends.

"I lost my line and length in that middle period," admitted Rogers. "We didn't say anything to each other, but I think we sensed we would have to dig deep, and we fought back, and got on top again."

Trading singles over the next two ends, Devon led Surrey, 17-14, after 14 ends, but dominated the closing stages, getting home with an impressive 2-3-2-1-3 sequence, so that, at 28-14, the Surrey pair conceded with two ends still left to play.

Melmore made a bee-line for her mobile phone, to tell her employers at Austin's department store in Newton Abbot that she would not be reporting for work this morning.

"I've just finished my first year at Plymouth University and I am earning some money by working at Austin's, who have been very generous to me," said Melmore, who is competing at Leamington at senior level for the first time.
