Shaldon look to get Devon's bid for glory at Worthing off to good start

Thursday, August 07, 2008, 23:00

DEVON'S men begin their quest for national glory at Worthing this weekend with an advance party from Shaldon out to win the National Two-Fours under skips James Webber and Neil Pook.

Webber's No. 3, England international Lee Haywood, believes that they are more than capable of winning.

"Worthing is a very special place to play and I know, if we play the bowls we're all capable of, we'll be very close to winning," said Haywood.

"The team is exactly the same as before and we're all definitely ready to rumble. We have a lot of support coming to Worthing with us, so hopefully we can give them something to cheer about."

Shaldon have the perfect warm-up for Worthing with Mid Devon League matches against both Newton Abbot and Kings this week.

"We will certainly be tested there," said Webber. "I guess these two games have come at a good time as we will need to be on our game if we are to get a decent result. It is certainly good preparation for the weekend."

After creating club history by winning through from the regional finals, Shaldon want to go on and finish the job now.

"That day of the regional finals was the best day I have ever had on a bowling green," said team member Simon Haywood. "Now we are there, we need to win it and if we don't, it won't be for the want of trying."

Shaldon team: Steve Davies, Scott Ivans, Phil Downs, Neil Pook; Gareth Foster, Simon Haywood, Lee Haywood, James Webber.
