ONE of Exeter's busiest streets is to be closed on Saturday, December 1, to allow hundreds of shoppers the chance to enjoy real Christmas cheer.

Organised by local people and coordinated by the St Leonard's Neighbourhood Association, the Christmas fair in Magdalen Road has become a festive urban village event in the city.

As well as well-established food, drink and gift shops, the street boasts newcomers like Belgreen Cafe, Ian Smith Wines, Leela and Arrietty retro haberdashers.

On Saturday, the road will be closed for the Christmas fair for everyone to enjoy the crafts people, toy makers, artists, cake-makers and other stall holders who will give the area a buzz.

About 40 covered stalls will provide lots to experience, and because of the success of last year's event stallholders are queuing up to be included this year.

There will be fairground rides, a tombola, a raffle raising funds for The West of England School and entertainment from St Leonard's Primary School.

Festive songs will be provided during the afternoon by Exeter's own crooner Jerri Hart, and the university's acapella group Semitoned will be performing under the Christmas lights.

Father Christmas is hoping to meet lots of good children to give out goodies to those who visit his grotto, provided with the kind help of the Express & Echo in the transformed launderette.

The fair is organised by St Leonard's Neighbourhood Association with help from Waitrose, SWH and Exeter City Council.

Nigel FitzHugh, the chairman of the St Leonard's Neighbourhood Association, said there was plenty on offer and hoped the event would prove a big hit with shoppers.

He said: "The high standard of the shops in Magdalen Road is well known.

"People still come from far and wide to shop here for its deli, butchers, fresh fish, restaurants, wine shop and many other interesting and independent traders.

"Add to those more stalls, music and entertainment, and the event is unmissable."

The event runs from 2pm to 6pm in Magdalen Road.
