Good Samaritan helped save elderly man from attackers

Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 09:18

POLICE investigating an attack by two teenage thugs on a partially-blind pensioner are trying to track down a Good Samaritan.

The 73-year-old victim was just ending a Sunday stroll from his nursing home when he was jumped on by two teenagers and knocked to the ground in Bolton Street, Brixham.

Luckily a man walking on the other side of the road rushed across and intervened to help the victim.

Police say his intervention may have saved the disabled walker from suffering serious injury.

Paignton CID crime investigator Dave Hardman said: "Fortunately, the man was not badly hurt — although he was quite shaken. If the Good Samaritan had not come to his aid, things could have been much worse. He is to be thanked for helping out."

He said nothing was known of the mystery hero, other than the fact he was a long-distance lorry driver.

"We would like him to come forward because he may be able to tell us more about the incident and the offenders who were seen to run off towards Bolton Cross," said Mr Hardman.

The incident happened at about 3.15pm on Sunday, November 8, but police have only just released details.

The assaulted man, who does not want to be named, was walking past the attacked. He had been out for an afternoon stroll and was heading towards a bus stop in order to return to his nursing home.

Mr Hardman said the victim was not able to give police a description of his assailants, except to say they were aged between 14 and 16.

"We think the lads were scared off by the approach of this Good Samaritan," he added.

Police want the hero, or anyone who might know who he is, to contact them on 08452 777444, quoting log 229 of November 11.
