AN increase in cash machine scams has prompted police to warn the public to be extra vigilant.

In the scam devices, which look professional and can be difficult to detect, are placed over cash machines to record bank details.

The pin number is recorded and the cash machine either states it has dispensed the cash or there is a fault and no money is released.

When the user goes into the bank or other premises to raise the issue, someone waiting nearby retrieves the device and cash.

PCSO Richard Shelton, of the neighbourhood policing team in Mincinglake, warned the public to be vigilant when using the machines and report anything suspicious.

He said: "These incidents are occurring mostly in Mid and East Devon, but public across the region should also be alert.

"Common targets are large supermarkets such as Tesco and Waitrose, however some smaller banks have also been affected."

The suspects are believed to be part of organised groups and are described as white foreign nationals.

Police are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious near a cashpoint to report it to police on 101 quoting crime number KH/12/401.

If the suspect is present or a device is found, people are asked to ring police on 999 and make a note of any vehicle registration details used by the suspect.
